Oakley Home Builders blends vintage - modern Chicago Tribune - While many builders are throwing in the towel, Oakley is busy building new houses on teardown lots in the western suburbs. The duo also builds spec houses, which, they say, appeal to transferees and to those who don't enjoy the months-long process of custom building. Counting rehabs, they completed 14 houses in 2009. Their houses run from $500,000 to $2.5 million, plus land. Exemplary of Oakley houses is a recently completed spec house on a teardown lot in Hinsdale. The partners re-used the limestone blocks from the original house's façade on the new house's chimney and porch apron. They re-used the patio brick on the new house's wine cellar walls.
Oakley Home Builders recently completed a beautiful coastal estate in Hinsdale. The project involved tearing down the original two-story yellow limestone home that was built in the 1940’s. The yellow limestone was reclaimed from the original brick and stone, featuring the Chicago Stone Company stamp, to use in the new home’s basement and wine cellar. The yellow lime stone adds a quality to the home that money can’t buy as the stone is no longer available for sale. While being green and reclaiming part of the iconic homestead Oakley Home Builders managed to build community relationships. The Hinsdale Doings reported the preservation. “The original house was built in the in the 1940’s by architect Hubert Bebb, according to the village’s 2005 town of Hinsdale survey.” The home looked historic with the fact that it was top to bottom lime stone which was unique. The 430 S. Washington home earned a significant rating, meaning it would be an important property should the neighborhood be classified as a landmark area. The reclaiming of the stone was environmentally friendly as well as preserving the historic nature of the home site. “This is an opportunity to help the environment and do something unique,” stated builder, Steve Sobkowiak. “And it’s a great story.”
