A First Look Outside: Brainard St.

Welcome to the Neighborhood!

People can tell when houses feel just right, this new custom home has that effect. Located in La Grange, IL, this home gets it right through its two gables, which sit at different heights, leaving it interesting yet trustworthy. The taller one, pulls your eye up, and the lower one over the garage answers it. Gray horizontal lap siding covers most of the walls, while the vertical board and batten stays up in the gables. Changing both the material and the direction of the lines at the same spot gives the eye a place to rest. It also keeps a two-car garage from taking over the front elevation, which is the most common problem with a house this size.

A Closer Look

The smaller details do most of the character work, as requested by these homeowners. A standing seam metal awning sits over the garage doors on painted brackets, and the same metal shows up again over the front porch. The garage doors are a warm wood tone with glass panes across the top, and since a garage door is often the largest single surface on the front of a house, that choice warms the gray siding around it. Stone at the base of the garage and along the porch wall grounds the lighter materials above, and copper-toned lanterns will pick up a soft patina over the years.

Out Back

The back of the house is an oasis for the three lovely dogs the homeowners have. A tall group of three windows anchors the wall, a glass-panel door leads straight to the patio, and a stone chimney rises beside the gable to signal the fireplace inside. The patio is sized for a sofa, two chairs, and a low table with room to walk around them, allowing for a beautiful backdrop for beautiful conversation.  If you're starting to think about siding, stone, rooflines, or how your yard should work, contact Oakley Home Builders and follow us on Instagram to see how these renderings become a finished home.
